Jesus the Christ died for our sins, his sacrifice was a substitution for us.

1st John 2:2
And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

2nd Corinthians 5:14
For the love of Christ constrains us; because we judge thus, that one died for all, therefore all died.

1st Peter 2:23-24
Who, when he was reviled, didn’t revile back. When he suffered, didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously; who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.
